2009 review – capital equipment financing

Considering the scale of the global economic downturn through much of 2009 and the impact that has had on certain industrial sectors, financings of capital equipment have surprisingly remained exceptionally buoyant. Jonathan Bell examines selected deals in some key sectors.

“We expect to sign a further 21 deals before yearend,” so stated the global head of export finance at one leading bank to this author in late November. With this volume of business still to be concluded, it is obviously going to be an interesting time when we fully assess potential deals of the year in January.
It is certainly nothing unusual for a number of capital equipment related financings to be coming to financial close late in the year – in fact, some sign between Christmas and New Year as banks push to get them within the calendar year. But this year the big players have more deals piling up than they would normally have. Despite economic downturns and project cancellations in many markets, for the export finance community, it has been a busy year.
