Americas Trade & Supply Chain: Lessons learned

As the global economy emerges from the downturn, the trade and supply chain finance industry in the Americas is dusting itself off and learning from the events of the past two years. Oliver O’Connell examines the scene.

As a region, the Americas presents a mixed bag economically. On the one hand you have the robust growth of Brazil with its infrastructure development, rising consumer spending, bounty of natural resources and diversifying trade flows. On the other hand you have a tentative recovery in the US that features a retooling of the economy to be less reliant on domestic consumption and more focused on trade to combat high unemployment.

As the tumult of the past two years appears to be subsiding, where has this left the trade and supply chain finance industry in the region? Overall there has been an uptick in enquiries and demand for trade finance solutions – even if many trade flows themselves are still somewhat depressed. Corporates are still focused on balancing the needs for risk management and mitigation, working capital optimisation, and cost control.
